Many people don’t like cleaning, and some just don’t where how and where to start. However, keeping the home clean and tidy helps to create a clean, healthy and relaxed space for friends and family to spend time. In this article we look at some of the most basic cleaning tips for beginners:

  1. Clean Top to Bottom

One of the basics from cleaning, is to clean top to bottom. The reason for this is that when cleaning/dusting, the dirt and dust etc will fall to a lower level in the room you are cleaning, and therefore it is a more efficient way to clean, i.e you are not cleaning anything twice!

  1. Mop out from a corner of the room.

The key to mopping any floor in the home, is to start in the furthest corner of the room. This will allow you to clean the entire floor area without stepping into any cleaned areas. This ensures you don’t clean any areas twice, and that you don’t risk slipping over on a freshly cleaned surface.

  1. Microfiber Cloths for Cleaning Glass

One of the common mistakes that people make when cleaning glass is to use just any old rag. This doesn’t provide a great result and will leave lint behind on the surface. For best results cleaning a glass surface, make sure you use a microfiber cloth.

  1. All Purpose Cleaners

Another common mistake is to use an ‘all-purpose cleaner’ for everything. It is better to use a specific cleaning liquid for different surfaces. This is because an ‘all-purpose cleaner’ can damage different surfaces. An example of this might be your kitchen worktops. Certain cleaners can make your granite worktops dull due to the ingredients in all purpose cleaner. Therefore, it’s worth getting specific cleaning fluid for different surfaces to be on the safe side.

  1. Keep Cleaning tools Nearby

Try to make sure you are within easy reach of all the main cleaning tools you need. One way to make the job of cleaning more difficult and more time consuming is to spend lots of time walking back and forth for different cleaning tools! We would recommend a cleaning caddy or at least an apron to keep most tools at the ready!

  1. Sweeping before Mopping

Another tip is to always sweep bathroom and kitchen floors first before mopping. Its usually recommended to rinse the mop after completing every square metre for best cleaning results.

  1. Don’t Scrub Carpet Stains

Another common mistake is when people try to remove a carpet stain by scrubbing the stained area. This will generally make the stain worse. The best course of action here is to dab the area to remove as much of the stain as possible in the first instance.
