It’s a common occurrence for accidents when living with a furry friend at home. And when it happens you really need to spring into action to get your carpet back into its former condition. To deal with it in the most effective way, we recommend some of the more natural home-made products to help you neutralise the odour and get rid of the stain fast.

Spring into Action

It’s normally a very easy thing to spot, although sometimes depending on location you may have to be guided by the smell to locate the source.

First, you will need to soak up as much as you can if the area is wet. This is best done with Kitchen Roll, and you can keep dabbing the area until you have removed as much liquid as possible.

If the issue is vomit or faeces however, you will ned to use a plastic bag to carefully pick up as much as you can, taking care not to press anything deeper into the fibres of the carpet. Once you have done this, you can then do as above using paper towels to remove as much as you can from the surface of the stain.

The Vinegar Solution

A simple, cheap, and effective cleaning solution is white vinegar. –

  • Simply mix 50% water with 50% white vinegar in a new or empty spray bottle.
  • Next you can apply the spray to the affected area with the solution.
  • Make sure you spray enough so that is really soaks into the fibres of the carpet. You might want to use a clean, soft brush here to help clean the area.
  • Once you feel you have cleaned thoroughly, you can then pat the area dry with Kitchen roll. Repeat as required if there is still any staining visible.

The Hydrogen Peroxide with Baking Soda Method

A well known and tested method is the Hydrogen Peroxide with Baking Soda Method. This has shown to very effective for stain removal and getting rid of bad odours.

  • Firstly, apply generous amounts of baking soda over the stain
  • The, using a 4:1 solution of Water to Hydrogen Peroxide (3% Hydrogen Peroxide)
  • Spray the mixed solution thoroughly over the area
  • Now using a soft, clean brush, thoroughly clean the area, working the solution into the fibres.
  • Once you feel you have cleaned thoroughly, you can then pat the area dry with Kitchen roll. Repeat as required if there is still any staining visible.

Hiring a Carpet Cleaner for the Job

Using a wet carpet cleaner, you will be able to flush the carpet with clean water and remove any dirty water in the process. Most people find this a very effective method for getting rid of pet stains, and restoring the carpet to its original condition quickly, although hiring the machine is not cheap in most cases.
