Many people prefer fabric sofas to leather as they feel a lot more comfortable to relax on. However, when it comes to cleaning, they can be a real chore. Unless you are prepared to use covers or throwovers, it’s probably a  good idea to look into how to clean your fabric sofa in the most efficient way:

  1. Check the Manufactreres Instructions – this should be the first course of action for any sofa. This will help ensure that you keep your warranty, and don’t damage your sofa even more in the process of cleaning.
  2. Check for any tags – If you can’t find the manufacturer’s instructions, then unless you have cut them off, you should be able to find a tag on the sofa detailing the cleaning instructions. This will give you all the useful information for cleaning your sofa. Some of the common abbreviations on the tag include:

W – Can be cleaned using water

S – water cannot be used. Solvent cleaner only

WS – Either water or a solvent-based cleaner

X – Can be vacuumed or brushed only

Pre- Cleaning your Sofa

First, you can use a vacuum to remove any larger debris on the surface of the sofa. Make sure you have multiple attachments available to help get into the small crevices around the sofa. You will need to remove all cushions of the sofa and vacuum all thoroughly.

Using a bristled brush, you can now tackle any other visible debris that hasn’t come off with the hoover. This is perfect for any debris that is really ‘caked in’ to the sofa. Always ensure you don’t go too hard with this part to ensure you don’t damage the sofa.

The next step is to remove any lint and fur. This is where a lint and fur remover come in. You can purchase a roller which is ready to go and perfect to get this part done quickly and efficiently. Once this is done, you will wan to focus on any hard surfaces of the sofa. These can be cleaned with an all-purpose surface cleaner.

In Part 2 of this blog post we will go through the step by step instructions for both cleaning with a water based detergent and steam clean, and also a popular dry cleaning method to clean your sofa.
